Accessibility basics
Are you aware of the basics of accessibility and what your team does to make information accessible?
Why it’s important:
- Being aware of the responsibilities of each team member keeps the team accountable to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
- Embedding accessibility into your product will ensure all users will be able to access your information.
Next steps
- Check that all team members know where to find the accessibility guidelines for their role and follow them from the beginning of a project.
- Become familiar with the high-level accessibility roles for each member of your team:
- Content design: Ensure content is written in plain language and headings, images, and links are accurately labelled.
- UX design: Ensure that overall experience is built and designed in an accessible nature. Conduct usability testing with all people, inclusive of people reliant on accessibility features.
- Visual design: Ensure that all designs are accessible, pages are laid out in a logical order and content meets colour contrast requirements.
- Development: Ensure front end code is written accessibly and manual and automated testing is conducted.
- Take a short course to gain a basic knowledge of accessibility.
- Learn how to navigate a webpage using your keyboard only. Also learn how to use a Screen Reader so you can check new features when required.
